Chronic Cough in New Jersey

The Digestive Health & Nutrition Center has two convenient locations in Lawrenceville and Princeton, New Jersey where you can receive the exceptional care you deserve. Angela Merlo, MD is an experienced Gastroenterologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive disorders causing chronic cough in adults and children.

What Causes Chronic Cough?

Respiratory symptoms such as chronic cough and wheezing are frequently caused by digestive disorders related to Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The reflux of acid into the esophagus can trigger a neurologic response to produce cough or asthmatic symptoms. The reflux may be so severe in some cases that acid will enter the respiratory area through the back of the throat and cause local irritation. Many patients are referred to Dr. Merlo following laryngoscopy that reveals non-specific inflammation or when no etiology for the cough is found by the throat specialists.

How is the Cause of My Cough Diagnosed?

The most common gastroenterological procedure for the diagnosis of chronic cough is endoscopy. Dr. Merlo is expert at performing endoscopy and interpreting the results. The vast majority of endoscopies performed by Dr. Merlo include sedation to eliminate discomfort and assure a thorough examination. Depending on your individual situation, Dr. Merlo may also recommend pH monitoring or esophageal manometry that is readily available at the Digestive Health & Nutrition Center. Once diagnosis is established, Dr. Merlo will propose a treatment plan that includes dietary and other lifestyle changes to resolve your problem.

If you or your children are experiencing chronic cough and seek an adult or pediatric Gastroenterologist for diagnosis and treatment, contact the Digestive Health & Nutrition Center in Lawrenceville or Princeton, New Jersey for an appointment with Dr. Merlo.
