Lactose Tolerance Tests in New Jersey

The Digestive Health & Nutrition Center has two convenient locations in Lawrenceville and Princeton, New Jersey where you can experience the exceptional care you deserve.  Angela Merlo, M.D. is an expert Gastroenterologist highly skilled in performing and interpreting lactose tolerance tests in adults as well as children.

Do I Have Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is common in adults as well as children. People with lactose intolerance cannot digest and absorb lactose which is the predominant sugar in cow’s milk and dairy products. Individuals who are lactose intolerant have a shortage of the enzyme known as lactase.  Lactase converts lactose to a simple form that can be absorbed. Any lactose that is not absorbed is digested by bacteria living in the gut.  People affected with lactose intolerance experience bloating, nausea, diarrhea and occasionally abdominal pain.  Lactose intolerance not only causes unwanted symptoms but can lead to other conditions such as bacterial overgrowth.

How is Lactose Intolerance Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is crucial as many conditions produce similar symptoms. Dr. Merlo does not advise dietary restrictions without a proper diagnosis. And Dr. Merlo will be certain to eliminate other conditions that can cause lactose intolerance such as Giardia infection and Celiac disease or gluten allergy.

The most sensitive and specific test for lactose intolerance is the breath hydrogen test. This test is non-invasive and suitable for adults and children older than three years. Lactose tolerance tests are readily available at the Digestive Health & Nutrition Center. Breath samples are collected at 30 to 60-min intervals following the ingestion of a pre-determined amount of lactose. Dr. Merlo has the instruments to analyze your breath samples during the test. Dr. Merlo will know whether you have lactose intolerance by the quantity of certain gases present in your breath samples. Results are available the day of your test and Dr. Merlo will formulate a proper plan before you leave the office.

If you or your child has symptoms or you suspect lactose intolerance and want to confirm the diagnosis, contact the Digestive Health & Nutrition Center in Lawrenceville or Princeton, New Jersey for an appointment. Dr. Merlo will expedite your care.
