Polypectomy (Removal of Polyps) in New Jersey

Polyps are common. The Digestive Health & Nutrition Center has two convenient locations in Lawrenceville and Princeton, New Jersey where you can receive the exceptional care you deserve. Angela Merlo, MD is an experienced Gastroenterologist highly skilled in performing colonoscopy and polypectomy in adults as well as children.

What is Polypectomy?

Polypectomy means removal of polyps. The vast majority of colon polyps can be safely removed during colonoscopy. Occasionally, polyps require surgical resection either because of their very large size or the presence of malignancy.  When a polyp is visualized during colonoscopy, special instruments are inserted through the colonoscope for resection and then retrieval so the entire polyp is removed from the body and submitted to Pathologists for microscopic analysis. Cautery and clips are sometimes deployed to prevent bleeding and insure proper healing. When performed properly, polypectomy is safe and effective in removing polyps and preventing the development of colorectal cancer.

What Can I Expect from Polypectomy?

Patients usually feel no pain during polypectomy even when sedation is not administered.  The polypectomy site naturally heals over the next two weeks. But, patients are able to return to normal activities the following day. Dr. Merlo may recommend not taking blood thinners for a few days depending on the size of polyp that was removed. Aspirin can usually be safely continued. The findings by Pathologists are available within four days.

Experts agree that the risk of developing colon cancer is greatly decreased in the years following a colonoscopy when the physician performing the colonoscopy takes the time necessary for a thorough examination so that all polyps can be detected and removed.   Dr. Merlo has exceptional expertise in the detection and removal of polyps and an unsurpassed dedication to provide the highest quality patient care possible.
