Am I Obese?

Obesity is determined by a calculation called Body Mass Index or BMI which equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. The accepted definitions are:

  • Overweight (BMI 25-29)
  • Obese (BMI 30-39)
  • Morbidly Obese (BMI 40 or greater)

BMI is the most commonly used measure. But, a more accurate determinant of health risk is the percent fat in the body and its distribution between various body segments. A person can have overfat but not be overweight or be overweight but not have overfat. Dr. Merlo can perform Body Composition Analysis for you during your usual appointment at the Digestive Health & Nutrition Center and answer your questions.
